Two nine-carat gold rings were also part of the expensive haul; one was described as a well-worn gent’s signet ring with the initial ‘N’ inscribed on the front; the other being a dress ring with twenty-eight small diamonds in two rows across the front. These items became vital clues in this murder hunt, but police knew they may have been taken to make it look like a robbery. On Christmas Day, in an effort to track down the killer or killers, Nigel’s parents issued a ‘substantial reward’ for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever was responsible for their son’s death.

A week on, the police had failed to uncover the stolen items; and a brown Mk III Ford Cortina, with a noisy exhaust blowing badly - reported to have been heard and seen being driven down Lancaster Drive, turning into Station Road towards Preston, at about 2.15 am on Saturday - was eventually eliminated from the inquiry. This crime proved to be a difficult nut to crack.

In January 1987, police had still not discounted the possibility that the murderer may be a local man. More than fifty officers were still engaged in inquiries. Pictures and descriptions of the stolen property had been distributed, and Detective Superintendent Boyd said they had been interviewing known Southport homosexuals. He added:

We are also interviewing people called Carl, who match the description of a hitch-hiker people believe Mr Bostock took back to his home. We still want to trace this man who is thought to be in his early 20s with reddish or sandy coloured hair.
